What is the function of the DEM file. There is a file of ther same name in the "system" folder. but is this specifically for the Mid East and as such should it be renamed or is it a replacement for the existing.

It is the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) map file which gives you the terrain modeling on the map screen. This allow you to see mountains and valleys instead of just a flat map view.

compare with yours and replace it if newer, gmapdem.img is the right name

Hi Caty this is not quite the correct blog but I see the thread for ME 2011.3 is closed ref the DEM file my existing file is 471,904 kb the new one is a newer date but only 115,114kb in size so it seems to me that if I replaced this file then I would lose a lot of detail from other maps, if this iscorrect and the file in that particular thread is for Mid East area is there any way to merge them.

May be did you have the Egypt& Morocco version before? I dont have your DEM map to compare.
