Default using a G2 vision map with a 78s device

    Hi all !

I need to use a bluechart G2 vision map with my 78s device.
Unfortunately, the map comes with a very dark satellite picture, instead of the depth lines and other navigation obstacles.

I couldn't find the option to deactivate this feature. Would anybody help please ?
    Thank you

I'm afraid, you wouldn't find this option.
G2Vision maps up to v11.00 (2009) generally weren't usable on handhelds, because of this awful satellite pictures. From v11.50 (2010) Garmin changed the G2V maps, so that the satellite imaginary is deactivatable on Oregon & co. Unfortunately on the new GPSmap 62 and 78 series both parts will be shown as one unit in maps menu, so that you have the same problem as Oregon & co. before! As long as Garmin don't change this by firmware upgrade, you can only use G2 or classic BlueCharts on your device. The horrible satellite images are dangerous for navigation. I nearly set a sailyacht on a rock between west swedish archipelago because I didn't see anything on the map after changing zoom range.

You can already do that easily with GmapTool.
I have done it several times and it has worked perfectly for me.
Split the file to separate .img files
Files > Details - look for any .img file containing the word "Bitmaps" - see example below (last line) "Bitmaps 377, size 8461066 (4)".
Remove these .img files from the combination and reassemble the gmapsupp.img (or whatever you want to name it).
    Raster images gone!

Hey ! good to know you have experienced the same issue. A great "thank you" for sharing it with me.
Trying to solve that issue was driving me crazy.
Now the proposal of Scubaddo looks rather expert level for me.
I'll give it a try, and let you know the result.

OK I have tried it, but I'm stuck :
    - I have split the file "by subfile".
    - I looked at the details and identified several files including "Bitmaps". I erased all these files.
    - then I Joined all the remaining files, and I have an error message :
"There were errors, result is faulty." and the log says "Wrong header (DSKIMG GARMIN), file D:/xx/Documents de x/My Maps/Garmin/VEU704L_v1150 unlock/Split/BLUCHART.MPS."

Thanks in advance for your help

    Try deleting BLUCHART.MPS before joining.

    ----------------------------------------
My method to remove raster images from BlueChart G2 mapsets:

Example file - "Garmin VPC416S BlueChart G2 New Zealand North v11.50" downloaded from this forum.
    gmapsupp.img - 520,822,784 bytes

    Open GMapTool
    Files > Add Files > gmapsupp.img

    Split:
Directory > (select your folder for the ".img" files)
    Create > single maps
    Split selected

Delete or move the original "gmapsupp.img"

    Close GMapTool (easiest method)
    Open GMapTool
Files > Add Directories (your folder with all the now extracted ".img" files) > OK
    Details

Look for any ".img" file containing the word "Bitmaps" on the last line and note them.

A part sample from my list:
    -----------------------------
    File: 08237056.img, length 9068544
    Header: 10.07.2011 02:39:18, DSKIMG, XOR 00, V 0.00, Ms 0

    Bitmaps 377, size 8461066 (4)
    --------------------------

    Close GMapTool (easiest method)

Go to the folder and delete all the ".img" files with word "Bitmaps" on the last line.
    DELETE "BLUCHART.MPS"

    Open GMapTool
Files > Add Directories (your folder with all the remaining ".img" files) > OK
    Join:
Output File > (I will call mine "D:\BlueChart G2 New Zealand North VPC416S.img)
Mapset name > (I will call mine "BlueChart G2 New Zealand North VPC416S")

    Join Selected

    Done - BlueChart G2 New Zealand North VPC416S.img - new size - 311,230,464 bytes

    Marvelous, indeed!

...but unfortunately not perfect. Not only the satellite images removed, also the harbour pictures, the additional POI and (that's really a big problem!) the tide informations!
But I think it must be possible to solve it. I hope the tide informations are only in one or some of those bitmap files and not in all of them!

    Hi p!xeldealer

I'm not sure what "harbour pictures" or "additional POI" are?

In my example above the tides still work perfectly on my Dakota 20. Also here with "VPC417S G2 Vision South Island New Zealand" and "Bluechart G2i Australia NewZealand v3".
I don't have any others to try.

To view tide times I have always used Where To > Tides.
Navaids, Anchorages, Restricted Areas etc. are all still there for searching on my bitmap free charts.

    I used for my test G2Vision map VEU710L - Denmark, Skagerrak & Kattegat, v11.50, FID2027

The size reduced from 1.65 GB to only 550 MB!

Actual G2Vision maps have beside the navigation map and the fishing map some additional features, like photos of harbours and POI in harbour cities and along coasts (e.g. restaurants, hotels, shopping facilities...). Those abdicable things are also removed, like the essential tide tables, when I deleted all tiles containing the word "Bitmaps" in the description.

I'm afraid it takes me much time to find out in which of the more then 10 bitmap tiles contained these informations.
