Try to rename your gmapprom.img to gmapsupp.img and copy in SD/Garmin (G capital letter), deselect in Map list maps covering the same area of this new map.
...can someone tell where i am going wrong please...
my wife and i are going to canada for her 65th and i have been given my son's old garmin 610 and a friend gave me a file called
'gmapprom.img' for Canada
i have a 1gb sd card and he told to create a folder called 'garmin' on the card.
I placed the file into the folder and then put the card into the nuvi but cannot see the "canada' map...
what am i getting wrong please?
thank you for any help or guidance

You have to navigate to get to the good.
Galaxy S5 Kitkat 4.4.2 / Nuvi1200->1250 / Nuvi3790T->34xx / Nuvi 2200 / Nuvi 66 / Oregon 600
...thank you so much for your incredibly quick response catymag, I have tried what you suggested, but to no avail...
the sd card is only 1gb but still has room left on it (the file is aprox 868mb) it is formatted as fat 16...could that be a problem?
the map that is in the nuvi memory (on board) is uk and europe...thanks again!!
format the sd to FAT32 and retry

is it OK to use just a 1gb card...the file is only 868mb, and fits, but the nuvi 610 will only read up to 2gb card...does it have to be a 2gb to work?

nuvi 6x0 can only see one image on SD named x:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img. It can read both FAT16 [>2GB] and FAT32 cards [4GB and over] but the gmapsupp.img file size must be less than 2GiB.

Some additional things to check:
To ensure that the SD is being recognised by the device, on the main screen hold the 'time' in the top RH corner for ~6 seconds to reach a hidden menu. Press 'Next' twice to reach the 'Data Card Test Page', wait for a few seconds and the card's info will show if the card is being seen.
To check that your map is ok, open it in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], press Info or Details Tab to see if any errors are shown or it's locked. Run [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] on the img to be sure it's not locked.

...thank you both very much for your input...i tried renaming both to sup1 and prom1, but no success.
NEIL...thank you for your ideas...i have hit the woodwork on stage 1.
I am on the screen that shows me the 'where to' 'view map' and travel kit' screen with the clock in the top right corner.
i am finding it impossible to press and hold 'clock/time' image without highlighting the 'spanner' icon and thus does not advance to a new menu.
Iam sorry to be so troublesome, but if you can bear with me, please tell me where i am going wrong...i feel certain if you guys had it in your hands you would resolve it immediately, so i remain hopeful and apologise for my lack of ability
...you know what...arn't forums wonderful things!!
You need to press in the very top of the RH cnr so use your thumb nail from over the top of the unit with your fingers behind. That way you'll get it everytime but pressing directly at the front risks touching the spanner field slightly. Hold for as long as necessary, about 6 seconds, if you see the spanner icon light up let go and start again.
PS: I've just noticed you added a 'MAC' prefix when you posted this thread. Are you using a mac and did you use it's format tool to format the SD? If so, do it again with this tool:
