Default How to fix 2589LMTHD Maps Locked, doesnt recognize USB connection ?

Please excuse my detailed forum post.

I have a Garmin 2589LMTHD with a GTM-60 power adapter that will not allow me to update maps using Garmin Express because it is not recognized as a USB device. I suspect this 2589LMTHD is locked by software, but I dont know how to unlock it. It seems a software lock is preventing this 2589 for being recognized as a USB device. When the GTM-60 power cord is connected to the 2589, a message pops up saying "COmpatible Traffic accessory required". Garmin Tech Support seem unwilling or unable to support this older model 2589LMTHD GPS other than provide basic email support.

Upon startup while connected using a Garmin USB data cable directly connected into a Win11 Laptop USB port, I immediately get a Garmin logo screen during Power-on Self Test and then get a message "Cannot unlock maps." The 2589 is not recognized as a USB device and does not appear in Windows File Manager. When I hit OK the 2589 goes to the Desktop, however I can use most functions and the GPS with installed maps are recognized and works with satellites. MyGarmin vintage Garmin North America maps for 2014 and 2015 are visible and both are selected. I tried connecting the 2589 to my Win11 Laptop with the Garmin data cable and attempted to use G7towin64.exe s/w to see if the USB connection is recognized (it is not).

Question 1: Why is this 2589 apparently locked by software and how do I unlock it? Is the software lock caused by a mismatched GTM-60 power cord that may be assigned to a different 2589 for traffic monitoring?

Question 2: How do I get the 2589 recoginized as USB device with a known-good OEM GARMIN data cable that works OK with other Garmin 2555 GPSs?

Question 3: Do I need reflash the firmware or else how do i check for missing/mismatched/damaged system files, when I cant see nor access the 2589 System partition? Where and how do I obtain and install fresh firmware for the 2589LMTHD Garmin Systems files?

When I check the Settings -> Device -> About, it says:

    Model Nuvi 2598
    HW Version: V3-00 SA3 8GB 128MB2S0 A05 BT DIG
    Built-in traffic receiver: Yes
    Unit ID: 3892xxxxx
    Software Version 4.50
    Audio Version 2.0 (American English-Samantha)
    Voice Command 2.30 (American English-Samantha)
    Text Version 4.50 (American English-Samantha)
    GPS Firmware 3.05.10
    Bluetooth Firmware: 3.0.11 P32
    FMI 3.1

    Hi

I'm not a Garmin expert, but, GTM 60™ HD is Digital Traffic Receiver. It is an optional extra
It should not be used directly for power/PC connection purposes. Use an adequate independent cable
The supplied USB to miniUSB cable that came with it is for map updates and data transfers only.

As for other connectivity issues, Win 11 can cause a lot of problems
About locked maps ... maybe they are locked, or maybe the chip is defective. Maybe the maps are on the card and it messed up

I assume that someone more knowledgeable will respond further

He refers to the Model Nuvi 2589 in his title and on the end he refers to the model 2598 both have been DISCONTINUED.
The chances of getting new map updates is almost "0"

There he talks about and I quote:

MyGarmin vintage Garmin North America maps for 2014 and 2015 are visible and both are selected
You run one or the other but not both at the same time.

Then trying to add yet another map update you will run into a space problem.

Question 1: Why is this 2589 apparently locked by software and how do I unlock it? Is the software lock caused by a mismatched GTM-60 power cord that may be assigned to a different 2589 for traffic monitoring?
I have the GTM-60 power adapter and can switch it to any comparable GPS unit and it works.

Then you stated that in the specs you say it has:

    Built-in traffic receiver: Yes
This unit needs a external GTM-60 power adapter to get traffic.

Which leaves me to believe that this a used GPS unit that you have and has problems.
    I could be wrong here......

That fact you are getting this message:

    "Cannot unlock maps."
You have download maps from another site rather than using Garmin Express to get updated maps.
So you will get that message.

As this site does not support how to unlock any Garmin maps or get them I will not go into that.

You need to be clearer on how you are using the GTM-60 power adapter. It can only be used to get traffic and power the unit while in you car or truck.

It can not be used on a PC or Laptop you will need a USB Garmin cable to do that.

If you are using a USB Garmin cable not the GTM-60 and can not connect then remove the drivers and download the newest drivers from Garmin and try again.

I have both Windows 10 and 11 laptops and have not run into this problem about connection any of my GPS UNIT.

You need to trouble shoot what are causing the problems.....
