I am in the diagnostic menu now I believe, but am unable to find the information referenced. To get to the diagnostic menu, I hold the battery icon to see the "Easter eggs" listed therein. Is this the right place? Or from a different screen?

It looks as if you are referencing the menu accessed through the speedometer. I held down the speedometer and was able to access the information. It appears as if I am running software version 6.0.

Nonvol info is available after three or four "next" screens. Once there, I see only "Quit, Next, Up arrow, and Down arrow." There is no "reset" option here.

I have the files ready to revert back to an earlier version of the software, but no way to begin that process successfully. The unit will go into USB mass storage device mode but I have to "trick" it into getting the Updater.exe to see the USB when I go into the diagnostic mode. This doesn't work though, and the device does not end up removing the software and applying new/old software. I just end up in the same place I started when I am complete.

UPDATE: The device NEVER writes anything to internal memory. It can read, but not write or delete. Webupdater and Updater.exe are never able to do anything. They both end up hanging. Webupdater stops @ 0 percent, Updater attempts to delete the old firmware and then abnormally ends.

the procedure as explained in the thread I linked before:

Go to "my computer" and into the device "Garmin" folder, delete the file "gupdate.gcd". However, it's always a good idea to back up the entire device (and the hidden files) to a folder on your computer.
Connect the gps to the PC's USB port and allow it to be detected. Now drag the downloaded file to your WebUpdater icon. When finished, safely disconnect the device from the PC. The update will take place on the gps on the next power cycle.

The "drag to icon" procedure will work if the icon/shortcut is on the desktop.

Hello, I'm brand new here. Yesterday, I tries to install the City Navigator in my GARMIN OREGON 300. Suddenly, the program made an update of the firmware of my Oregon...without asking!! After the update, I lost all my installed maps, and it is very dificult to install new maps... or unlocking them. When I start up, my Oregon says "Can't Authenticate maps" Help?? Can I put back the earlier version of the firmware, or do you have another solution? Thx

I totally understand the procedure you're describing and have attempted the steps per the writeup and your summary of the writeup. There is no gupdate.gcd file to be found on the Garmin, in the /Garmin directory or anywhere else. I've done a search, hidden files are shown, I've even double-checked myself using a command prompt -- no dice.

When I drag the downloaded GCD to the WebUpdater, the process begins and later fails. It is unable to write anything to the Garmin.

Similarly, I cannot get ANY changes I make to the file system to stay after reboot. When I delete the gpx file, it reappears after reboot. When I delete one or more img files, they too return after reboot.

Any changes to the file system cause the system to bring up the screen calibration page upon reboot. I have to hold the power button to force a hard restart. Eventually, that will allow me to boot into the GPS but none of my intended changes have stuck.

I've tried it all -- Windows checkdisk fails. Goes part way, looks like it has done some work, but it never completes and returns to a C:> to let you know all is well. I have to "force" a power off by holding the power button for 10 secs. Then I'm back into the original loop... sounds like a goner.
