Here is a list of many free downloadable map sites that can be put directly on to your Garmin Unit.
Some sites comes with installs to be used with MapSource or BaseCamp.
You can also take an IMG file and make a MapSource or BaseCamp install if you know how with GMapTool.

If you do not know where to put the IMG and GPX files for you Handheld then read you manual or Google it.Please note I keep all my IMG files of the maps on SD cards. None are on the Handheld units memory other than what comes with the Handheld.
Exampe of an IMG on the Handheld: Garmin DEM Map EU or Worldwide Autoroute DEM Basemap,NR or Time Zone Map
That way I can change countries at any time depending on where I will be hiking.
All files can be copied directly to the SD with out the use of MapSource or BaseCamp.
I only use Mapsource to make my tracks and view my Geocache files.
These also are copied to the SD card in the GPX folder with out the use of MapSource or BaseCamp.
PS: Buy good SD cards not cheap ones...........
I use a explore called XYplorer.
This explore show everything on a Garmin Unit without having to do anything.
Just plug the Handheld into your PC or Laptop and open XYplorer and you can even see the .System folder too on some models that have this including and also on Garmin Nuvi GPS units.
On the SD card make a folder \Garmin <---your IMG map goes here.
Most new Handheld units will let you do the renaming of the IMG file.
instead of gmapsupp.img give it a good name.
Example: belgium.img, spain.img, germany.img
If more that one country
Example:
Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg and Germany
OSM-BHLG.img instead of gmapsupp.img
Under \Garmin\GPX <----your tracks and Geocaches go there.
What every you do always remove the SD card form you Handheld.
Put it in the PC or Laptop and add a map or GPX file.
This will copy a IMG file much quicker too....
If you run into problems with the SD card please remove your Handheld from the PC and then remove the SD cards to do the formatting of the SD on the PC or Laptop.
Do not do this while your Handheld is attached to your PC.
To many users on this forum make the mistake and format the internal memory of their Handheld and screw it up.
Think over before you do anything about formatting first.
