    Hi Neil,

Thanks for all the tips, they should reduce the risk of failure. I am going to try this later this week. One question; there are two Zumo 2x0 firmware versions on the Garmin website (zumo2x0_GCDFile_300.gcd and zumo2x0_GCDFile_280.gcd) which is the most appropriate version to use?

    Regards

You can use either, but i'd use the latest version. It's been out since June 2012 so should be stable. It was only a minor bug-fix version anyway. Garmin's changlog:

Changes made from version 2.80 to 3.00:

Fixed a bug that caused the device to stick while loading maps following a map update.

Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.80:

Fixed an error that caused the device to shut down while importing a route from Basecamp.
Updated to comply with France Safety Camera decree.

    HI Neil,

I started doing the NV backup but I a having some trouble locating the boot.bin file. Is the RGN tool able to locate this file on the Nuvi?

    HI Neil,

Also wanted ask what do you name the RGN file?

For NV Backup: Open the *.gcd file in RGN_Tool. In the first section is the boot.bin, click 'Save' on the right and save it as 'Ldr.bin' in the folder 0723.

For flashing the firmware: You can name the rgn file as 072301000300.rgn if using the nuvi 5xx boot.bin with the zumo 220 fw_all.bin [safest way]. See new point 5 in Post #40.

    Hi Neil,

Have now gotten to the stage where I am trying to upload the new firmware file into the Nuvi using updater but am finding that updater is not able to see the USB device (Nuvi). I start up the Nuvi and press the battery icon which puts it into a diagnostic mode, then connect to the pc and run updater. Click on USB connection and press ok. Thats when i get the no USB devices available message. The USB ports are ok as i can see the Nuvi and the drive when normally connected to the pc (not in diagnostic mode).

No Nuvi's are shown in the drop down window in updater for USB devices when the Nuvi is connected.

yes, i have read those instructions and i cant get the nuvi 550 into preboot mode. I follow the instructions shown. if i hold down the upper left screen and press and hold the power button i get a calibration screen instead.

You've found preboot, but you didn't start flashing quickly enough so the nuvi has gone to the calibration screen.

This is the suggested way for your unit from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], but i prefer not to use it if possible:
    1. Turn off the navigator.

    2. Click and hold the upper left corner of the screen.

    3. Click and hold down the power button.
I don't have a 5xx to hand, but most nuvis can reach preboot even easier. This is what i always do initially when flashing fw and it works with most nuvis. Try this:

*Firstly, drag the rgn file onto updater.exe and have it visible on your desktop with the radio button selected next to 'USB Device:'. Position the mouse cursor over 'OK' ready to click.
*Plug a USB lead into a rear port of your PC, but not into the nuvi just yet.
*Hold the unit in your left hand, with your left thumb firmly pressing the uppermost part of the left hand corner of the screen and your fingers holding the unit from behind.
*Push the mini usb plug into the nuvi while watching updater.exe and as soon as you see the unit's details appear in the window adjacent to 'USB Device:' immediately press 'OK' button to start the flash. Maintain the pressure on the screen at least until you see 'Loader' appear and wait until it has finished successfully before unplugging the unit. It may reboot itself or you may have to turn it on.

Don't forget to do the NV backup and hard reset before and after the fw flash.
