    Default Dead 3790

    Hi again
I have had some very good info & excellent results using these forums & as I enjoy playing around with Sat Navs , I purchased a couple of 3790 units on the cheap described as not working !

Unit 1 was completely Blank ,nothing at all appeared to be happening , until I noticed it was showing as connected in the (Win 7) taskbar ,checked all the files etc , and to my limited knowledge ,looked OK .
Opened up the unit and both ribbon connectors from the screen were "unplugged" ,I reconnected them and presto , everything works fine .confusing as to how why this had happened , but hey ! good result ,more than covered the cost of purchasing both units .

Unit 2 ....Blank ...nothing ....nada ....

Not recognised by PC , tried leaving on charge 24 hrs ,no change
tried all posted methods of entering pre boot mode ,SD card ,plugged into PC, not plugged in ...no change
poised with cure ready to initiate if the unit showed up ........like watching grass grow !!..no change

Is this what is meant by "bricked" ... or is there anything radical I could try , as the cost of it was recovered by unit 1 , not worried about trashing it ....

    Regards

    'Bricked or Partly-bricked' = 'Pregnant or Partly-pregnant'.

In truth, most units aren't bricked in the literal sense although we all use the term when we mean that the device has a firmware or corrupt files problem. But really if it can be recovered it's not 'a brick'. Unfortunately, some units are irrecoverable and it's often due to a hardware problem. Sometimes it will show a very faint light on the screen if you take the unit into a very dark room and hold the on button down. 37x0 are a hardy lot and hard to 'fully brick'.

Try connecting it with a usb lead to your PC to charge it rather than the car charger for an extended period. If no go ... so .... open it up and disconnect the battery for a while. You know the drill by now Ducky.

    Thanks Neil
I have tried 24 hrs with no battery in , 24 hrs charging on PC ,not a Glimmer at all so guess it must be hardware .............. I have a 3760 with a leaky screen so at worse I could salvage the screen to use there ..........

    regards

Plug unit to Pc and try to hold power button 10 sec if nuvi will turn on.
Try hold 60 sec power button
Unplug nuvi, try to hold 30 sec power button and then connect nuvi to Pc.
Try to clean usb plug on nuvi.
    Try to change usb cable.
Try to connect nuvi in car.

    Hi,
thanks for the suggestion , have just tried various combinations inc the ones you mentioned but still nothing .
What I have noticed is that the nuvi gets a slightly warm around the area of thr pc board ,so it must be doing something even if its only charging the battery

    Thanks

Test Individual parts "display", "Battery" etc in your other Nuvi.
Most probably you have a dead board.

I think an autopsy is in order Dr Mallard! [are you an NCIS fan?]. Good advice again from dasilvarsa. Most likely it's hardware failure, i suspect there is some common component in 37xx hw which fails because every now and then one will defy all efforts of recovery and remain 'dead'. You could try flexing the board a little while powering on but even if the pcb is cr@cked or if it's a 'dry-joint' type of fault it's toast anyway imo. Boards aren't worth messing around with these days ....

You and i must be living in parallel universes. I had a 3790 in bits in my parts drawer which i bought cheap a year or so back as 'For parts or not working' on eBay. I couldn't coax it back to life. Individually the screen and battery work with another 3790, but known-working battery and screen won't work with its board. Gone coon. Picked up another 3790 on eBay just recently described as the screen having 'bubbles at one end', this one:

The traffic receiver and mount alone are each worth what i paid for it. Quick screen switch from the dead one and its all good.

    Hi Neil
Yes , I'm checking ebay quite often as well , to be honest ,I have a few now , different models . Picked up a 42lm & a 52lm quite cheap , but didn't like them because it's all a bit new to me & I didn't realise they were "essential series " not enough features .
I am going to swap bits & pieces about and get the latest 39xx working .

Look out for a few questions on the navigon 7200, just got a couple ,first thoughts .... yuk!

Out of interest where in aus are you ??
    regards
