Thank you. unfortunately having no success recovering the unit. after updater.exe finishes flashing software device disconnects from usb with communication error from updater.exe i have tried both cure and original rgn's. any idea what else i can try? flash drive itself is okay since i was able to format it with usbprep. device is stuck on the boot loop, and yes i created garmin folder after formatting it so that's not the issue.
EDIT: after some hesitation it finally worked. what helped was disconnecting the unit during the update process and quickly connecting it back in pre-boot mode.

You've likely re-formatted it for no good reason seeing it's still bootlooping. If a device is truly 'soft-bricked' it has no access to Mass Storage Mode. Did yours have MSM available without Cure firmware loaded, or only after it was loaded? If it had MSM access without Cure fw, the bootlooping likely is due to something else entirely other than a corrupt file onboard anyway (now removed regardless, due to formatting it).
It important to know the exact error message you received from Updater.exe also.
EDIT: Your edit appeared in previous post as i posted this.

it was soft bricked and i was able to access flash drive only by using a quickcure app. old gupdate.gcd inside with 0 bites on it suggested it was software issue, performed a formatting just in case to eliminate as a possible cause.
The zero bytes of the GCD file is the clue indeed as it should have been ~20MB and was probably what was causing the bootloop. The device would have been recognising it as a firmware update file and so endlessly and fruitlessly attempting to process it to re-flash appropriate memory regions.
You may find that you'll need to load the aviation basemap manually as normally Garmin's programs, GarminExpress and WebUpdater, might not offer to replace it. If you need one and can't source it from a reliable backup or elsewhere let me know.
Anyway good result. I'll mark the thread as 'solved'. Safe flying.

Device now works fine, but i have another unexpected issue, before re-formatting a made a copy of aviation data bases, i copy-paste them back and to my surprise device shows message 'cannot unlock databases' any ideas what could cause that? i haven't missed any files from data base folder, it just as it was originally located on the device.
Been quite a while since i used an aera portable and i don't know any PPL holders in my circle using one these days so i'm guessing now: In your backup are there other associated files, possibly with extension of GMA and maybe UNL too, that may have been in the same directory as the data base or IMG files?
