Default Etrex 20 and 30 : an easy way to get into pre-boot

I used the method numerous times and the etrex 30 was easily recognized by Updater.exe. Too is safer because it is not necessary to keep any button pressed during the process and were not dependent of synchronization to the pre-boot.

Press and hold the joystick bar of the etrex for 10 seconds while turning ON the GPS.
Should then appear the white Diagnostic screen. Release the joystick, load the .rgn file that the GPS will be recognized by Updater.exe. Just give OK and wait for the installation of firmware.

If you can not enter the Diagnostic Page use the traditional method.

Preboot mode enables the use of Updater.exe to flash (modified) firmware into the device. Not used for normal use.

    That's great, thanks.

I've been into custom firmware's for just about everything I own for years but i'm new to the GPS scene. Are there good firmware's that exist for the 20 and 30?

Yes, for example, installing the patched firmware that unlocks access to georeferenced images Birdseye (JNX format) that does not come from the Garmin website (service subscription), that is, you can prepare and use your own raster images of scanned maps, google earth... In this case it is not necessary to install the firmware at pre-boot.

Read about the JNX standard here:

Probably smokefree was talking about service mode firmware as .rgn format to flash in case of corrupted firmware recovery (System software missing or hard bricked device)
In these cases pc doesn't see the gps, so flashing in preboot with Updater.exe is the only chance to revive it.

Updater.exe is an old soft, it was the standard flash utility for old Garmin devices.
