I have the TomTom ONE XL, ONE 3rd edition with navcore 8.010
Bootloader version :53013
Map in use :USA_and_Canada_885_4092
I would like to install a one of the latest maps like the 905 but i can't find one with the meta code that will work on the navcore version that i have,my question is there a map that will work on this unit or should i flash with a patched navcore so i can find a map that will have a meta code already posted. My second question is I have a 4gb sd card will this unit read the card with the current bootloader or do i also have to upgrade the bootlaoder because i have read that it is tricky playing around with the bootloader

You can use my 9.485 with Memory Boost, this gives you access to the latest, full featured maps.
For the bootloader I recommend the 5.5012 or the 5.5112.

Downunder35m i did what you said and put everything on the sd card,all working good only thing is it takes longer to aquire satellite reception sometimes up to 5 min. is that normal with this navcore and sometimes it doesn't shut down but goes into standby mode if I take card out it shuts down and boots up but if I leave card in slot it goes to stand by not all the time

Connect to Home and download the latest quick fix data.
Create textfile with a number in seconds inside - the value will determine after how many seconds the device switches from standby to fully off.
Rename that textfile to suicide.dat and place it in the root of your device.
